Musical Acoustics
Music and Acoustic Engineering (Master’s degree), 10 credits, taught in English.
The course covers the physics and modeling of acoustic musical instruments: how they vibrate and radiate sound, how to characterize them through vibro-acoustic measurements, how to describe them with electrical equivalent circuits, and how to use the resulting models for sound synthesis.
Topics include strings, bars, membranes, plates, pipes and horns, and the main instrument families (strings, reed and jet wind instruments, percussion). Laboratory activities include finite element modeling, vibrational and acoustic measurements.
Computer Music: Languages and Systems
Music and Acoustic Engineering (Master’s degree), 5 credits, taught in English.
A practical introduction to the technology behind computer music systems. The course starts from the requirements of such a system, then covers SuperCollider as a programming language for sound synthesis and control, the development of audio plugins for digital audio workstations with JUCE, and the design of musical interaction, from protocols such as MIDI and Open Sound Control to hardware platforms such as Arduino and Bela.
The exam combines a group project, presented to the class, with a written test.
